I bought some of these wide-mouth preserving jars recently when I did a two week juice feast. They really are fantastic!
Mason jars don’t really seem to be so popular here in Australia. One hardware store near me sells Fowler Vacuola jars, but they cost about $10 a piece. Insane really when you consider that they are only jars… Anyway, I bought a set of twelve of these 1 quart (approximately 1 litre) jars and I have found that they keep juices very fresh. I can make a juice in the morning, say 7am, and drink it in the afternoon without even refrigerating it and notice negligible quality degradation. I don’t recommend to do this in general, but one time I forgot to drink a juice that I had prepared in the morning and left in the fridge. I drank it 24 hours after I had prepared it and it still tasted fine
I am not juice feasting any this week (but I hope to make it a regular practise) so my jars are sitting unused. As a new challenge I have decided to use them to make kim chi. I’ll see how that goes. I’ve never made it before so I’m looking forward to the experiment.
Benefits of the mason jars over regular jars:
- They don’t leak. I was able to carry a jar of juice in my handbag during my juice feast without any accidents at all.
- They really do keep the contents fresh.
- They have a wide mouth which makes them so much easier to clean.
- You can buy accesories for them – check out this sprouting strainer lid
which turns your jars into easy sprouters!
I’m very happy with them. I recommend the 1 quart size because in a juice feast you can then divide your juices up into four meals.
