Today I spent the day looking at apartments around South Melbourne and Southbank. I am looking for an apartment that is close or in the CBD, with a big kitchen, a big main bedroom and that has extra facilities in the complex like a gym and a sauna. Where I would be without my iPhone I don’t know – it is immeasurably useful for browsing open inspections on realestate.com.au in a safari window, while simultaneously plotting the next address into google maps and generating a route. Great for days when you’re on the go constantly but don’t know your way around a particular area.
We will be downsizing from a three bedroom house with a separate laundry to a two bedroom apartment with only a European laundry, so I have no idea where I am going to put my dehydrator! In any case, I’m really looking forward to being able to prepare good food again. I am wishing that I had at least brought my own knife and some mason jars, but alas everything is in storage. I did bring my vitamix though, so enjoying a few good smoothies. Vine ripened tomato, celery, capsicum and cayenne pepper makes a delicious savoury smoothie in the vitamix. The vitamix does a good job of pulverising the celery so there are no strings left.
I discovered the South Melbourne market yesterday, when driving around on my way back from Le Cru. It’s a nice market – not too big, so it is not so hard to find a carpark, but it has a couple of every kind of shop that any gourmet would need. I had been having trouble finding a deli that did a good hommous, so at the South Melbourne market I was spoiled for choice. My favourite food when I don’t have any kitchen gear available is to wrap lots of organic mixed greens and a thin spread of good quality hommous in mountain bread. I also bought some chickpeas from the South Melbourne market so that I can make my own. Ideally I’d like to make a raw version so I’ll look out for a shop that sells sprouting bags.
I’m hoping our apartment will have a balcony so that I can grow my own fresh greens in tubs. I have two bokashi buckets that I use in the kitchen and so I can use the fermented food scraps if I have large enough containers on the balcony. I plan to grow spinach, lettuce, kale, wheatgrass and fresh herbs on my balcony, and grow some sprouts in the kitchen too.
Yum! Can’t wait. Eating so many greens has been delicious and I have been feeling so healthy. If I find a place in South Melbourne we’ll be living within walking distance to both of our workplaces too. I’d like to jog to work in the mornings.
