I decided to try out my new Vitamix for the first time today. I have been umming and ahhing about whether to use it before I moved house, since it was so neatly packed. But in the end my curiosity got the better of me and I unpacked my new, gleaming red 5200 model and placed it on my kitchen benchtop to behold.
I was surprised to discover that the container is not actually held down to the base at all. I do not know the physics behind why the liquid will rise but the container will not, but it works. The container simply sits on top of the motor, and the power pushes it sideways, to be caught by four corner plugs. It s a very simple design, and I much prefer it to my Sunbeam Cafe Series blender, which is almost impossible to use now as it is been designed to lock in place and the locking mechanism has been worn away.
According to Raw Pleasure .com .au where I bought my Vitamix, the blades travel at 384.26 km per hour so you can expect your food to be well and truly pulverised. It also comes with a seven year warranty which is very impressive.
I decided to break the blender in with a very difficult task to see how well it would respond: blending a whole pineapple. Well, without the skin of course. Normally pineapples are very stringy and a standard blender cannot break through the tough fibres which makes it unpleasant to drink in a smoothie. I put the pineapple and some water in the blender, flicked the switch and WHOOOSH! the machine was busy blending. It was not as noisy as I expected, and when I came to pour the drink it was smooth and creamy with a lot of ‘head’.
When drinking the smoothie I did notice that a couple of small bits of pineapple still remained, but overall the drink was consistently smooth. I think it will just take some experimentation as to how long to blend. The most smoothness will obviously come with a longer blending time, but some ice should be added to avoid the smoothie heating up. Six minutes blending will turn the liquid into a hot cooked soup!
I am looking forward to trying some of the recipes that came with the Vitamix. The cook book is very good quality and has been well thought out in terms of design. The book actually come with its own in-built book stand.
I am very happy with this machine!
Petra’s note: I blended a second time and all the remaining lumps were eradicated. I’ve never experienced pineapple so smooth.

/ May 29, 2010Hi Petra,
i love my vitamix, have had it since November!
Apparently, if you switch to that superfast mode (that switch on the left), it is supposed to stay cooled, and there is more ventilation.
However, I have had some smoothies turn out quite qarm, probably I kept it on lower speed for too long.
I learned that pouring it over ice and letting it sit for a few minutes will cool the smoothie down better than blending in ice cubes.
cheers! Lisa

/ May 31, 2010That’s a nice idea Lisa! I like my smoothies to be really ‘smooth’ personally, don’t even like ice in water. But this is a great solution if the blender contents ever do get too warm. I’m going to start making more smoothies now that I have my vitamix. I don’t like taking supplements so I am hoping I can hide some DHA, spirulina etc in my smoothies, and so I’ll see how well mixed I can make it
All the best,
Petra
